TLT supports new scheme to provide £12million of free legal advice
10 July 2009
TLT is supporting Roll on Friday's 'Community Action' scheme launched today, which will enable lawyers who have been made redundant to continue practising law and provide free advice to charities and communities. It is anticipated that this initiative will provide the equivalent of £12million of legal services to benefit communities.
The scheme is a joint project between leading legal community website Roll On Friday and LawWorks, a charity seeking to increase free legal advice to individuals and communities. It is designed to increase the amount of pro bono legal advice given, and also raise the morale and profile of some of the estimated 10,000 lawyers who are expected to be made redundant during the downturn.
TLT will guarantee an interview to those lawyers applying for a vacant role at the firm and whom have completed over 20 hours of pro bono legal advice as part of the scheme. TLT has also contributed to the cost of the scheme by covering the cost of practising certificates for some participants.
TLT is one of 25 national firms participating in the scheme. Others include Allen & Overy, Ashurst, Berwin Leighton Paisner, Clifford Chance, CMS Cameron McKenna, Denton Wilde Sapte, Eversheds, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Herbert Smith, Linklaters, Lovells, Norton Rose and Slaughter and May.
Graham de Guise, TLT's HR Director, comments, "TLT has a strong track record of pro bono activity and we are keen to attract lawyers that are proactive and are genuinely passionate about the law. This is an incredibly worthwhile scheme and we're glad to be a part of it."
Rebecca Hilsenrath, CEO, LawWorks says, “This year, LawWorks has seen applications for legal assistance from community groups rise by 50%. We are confident that this will provide an imaginative and effective answer to one of the many challenges of the recession.”
