Environmental action

As a responsible business, we actively promote a green attitude.

We aim to run a sustainable business and put environmental considerations at the heart of all the business decisions we make.

TLT is working to minimise its carbon emissions and we do this through a combination of recycling, reducing the amount of paper we use and the energy we consume. We want to ensure that our green efforts will help make a real difference in the future.

Green Day case study

TLT had been actively involved in initiatives to encourage colleagues to reduce energy and resource consumption wherever possible for some time, but wanted to approach staff more directly and in an innovative way so that they became engaged and started to take personal responsibility for making environmental considerations intrinsic to their work.

To raise awareness of wide-ranging sustainability issues, TLT's Environmental Action Committee planned a 'Green Day' which took place in September 2007 with three main elements: a travel survey to capture information about staff commuting habits; a dress-down day, where staff were asked to wear something green to show support for making TLT a greener place to work; and a lunchtime exhibition, where six 'green' organisations including Sustainability South West, the Soil Association and Bristol City Council provided staff with information about carbon reduction both in the workplace and at home.

In the lead up to the event, the Green Team also organised a raffle with 40 prizes that helped the winners reduce their CO2 emissions ranging from a 'Grow Your Own Vegetables' kit with statistics regarding food miles to a bike safety kit with cycle path maps and information about car emissions.

The Green Day proved a huge success. The lunchtime event was attended by over 100 staff and around three quarters of all staff wore green clothing to demonstrate their support. The travel survey revealed that one third of TLT staff were commuting to work in a car, and on Green Day, more than 30% of these left their cars at home.
